On the night of December 3, 2024, South Korea was thrust into a political crisis when President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law. Within hours, soldiers and police surrounded the National Assembly, while lawmakers scrambled to convene and overturn the order. But outside, thousands of ordinary citizens poured into the streets of Seoul, standing between armed troops and the democratic institutions they feared were under threat.
Urgent, unvarnished, and captured with the immediacy of reportage, THE SEOUL GUARDIANS places audiences directly inside this extraordinary night, moving between protesters, soldiers, journalists, lawmakers, and National Assembly staff as events rapidly unfold. Haunted by the collective memory of the Gwangju Massacre and South Korea’s long struggle for democracy, citizens confront the possibility of history repeating itself. More than a record of a political crisis, THE SEOUL GUARDIANS is a gripping testament to civic resistance, collective memory, and the fragile institutions ordinary people are sometimes called upon to defend.
This film is nominated for the Kau Ka Hōkū Award presented by Hawaiian Airlines. The first screening will be followed by an extended virtual conversation with the filmmakers.
