TANGLES
World premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, TANGLES is a moving animated adaptation of Canadian cartoonist Sarah Leavitt’s acclaimed graphic memoir. Sarah, a young queer artist and activist living in 1990s San Francisco, reluctantly returns to the conservative small town and eccentric family she left behind when her mother, Midge, is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As Midge’s vibrant personality and memories gradually disappear, Sarah must navigate complicated family dynamics, the painful realities of caregiving, and what it means to become the daughter her mother now needs.
Featuring the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Abbi Jacobson and Bryan Cranston, director Leah Nelson’s feature debut transforms Leavitt’s distinctive drawings into expressive, imaginative animation. Balancing heartbreak with warmth and idiosyncratic humor, TANGLES finds moments of joy amid profound loss, while Sarah’s memories of a formative lesbian romance provide a tender counterpoint. The result is an intimate portrait of memory, identity, family and enduring love.
