SUMO SPIRIT WEIGHS NOTHING offers rare access inside Japan’s fiercely guarded world of professional sumo, revealing the sacrifice, discipline, and resilience required to survive one of the country’s most punishing traditions. Japanese American filmmaker Erik Shirai follows wrestlers at vastly different stages of their careers, from former yokozuna Terunofuji, now stablemaster Isegahama, to top-division contender Hiradoumi, rising makushita wrestler Yonezawaryu, and undersized jonidan competitor Kosei.

Moving between sumo stables, where wrestlers live and train under strict hierarchies, Shirai captures both the physical brutality of the sport and the quieter struggle to refine the spirit behind it. Through victories, injuries, setbacks, and relentless training emerges an intimate portrait of men testing the limits of body and identity.
