In the summer of 2002, best friends Minnie and Callie are preparing for senior year at their North Little Rock high school in Arkansas. Callie is the charismatic star of the drama program, while shy Minnie is content to remain her reliable shadow. Growing up in Callie’s protective orbit, Minnie finds refuge at her friend’s upper-class home, where Callie’s elegant mother, Helen (Sophie Okonedo, also in CLARISSA), offers warmth and attention, a stark contrast to Minnie’s hard-scrabble life with her overextended veterinarian mother, Barbara.

When Callie and Minnie’s friendship is suddenly upended, Minnie is left rudderless and forced to establish an identity of her own. Pulling away from Barbara, she develops an increasingly complicated attachment to Helen. Making a major splash with its world premiere at the Berlinale, the latest from GHOSTLIGHT directors Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson is a perceptive coming-of-age drama, anchored by awards-worthy performances from Okonedo and remarkable newcomer Katherine Mallen Kupferer as Minnie.

This film is nominated for the Kau Ka Hōkū Award presented by Hawaiian Airlines.
