SPECIAL PRESENTATION
INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM
The second installment of the original INDIANA JONES trilogy, TEMPLE OF DOOM is actually a prequel to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. In this film, fortune-seeking adventurer Indiana Jones escapes Shanghai for India, where a mysterious cult leads to one of the franchise’s darkest adventures. TEMPLE OF DOOM’s gruesome imagery famously helped spur the creation of the PG-13 rating, while its outdated Orientalism remains impossible to ignore.
Yet TEMPLE OF DOOM remains a rollicking blockbuster, notably introducing audiences to Ke Huy Quan as the precocious Short Round. Bursting with spunk, humor, and heart, the young immigrant actor delivered an instantly iconic performance. Four decades later, Quan won an Academy Award® for his triumphant return in EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.
Join us as we revisit the film with actor, HIFF Career Achievement Award honoree, and New American Perspectives featured filmmaker Ke Huy Quan in a post-screening Master Class celebrating the unforgettable role that started it all.
This event is presented as part of the New American Perspectives program. Developed in partnership with the Vilcek Foundation, the program shines a spotlight on immigrant and foreign-born artists, celebrating the powerful impact that diversity has on contemporary cinema and storytelling in the United States.
