ELEPHANTS IN THE FOG
Deep within the forests of Nepal, where wild elephants move like spirits through the mist, Pirati presides as the matriarch of a close-knit Kinnar transgender community. Respected and relied upon by her chosen family, she quietly longs for another life, dreaming of leaving with the man she loves and escaping the responsibilities that have come to define her. But when one of her daughters suddenly disappears, Pirati is forced to remain and search for answers, confronting the precarious realities faced by transgender women living on the margins of Nepalese society. As the mystery deepens, she finds herself torn between personal freedom and her obligations to a community that depends on her.
Set against Nepal’s lush, haunting landscape, ELEPHANTS IN THE FOG is a tender and atmospheric portrait of transgender identity, love, sacrifice, and chosen family, where the desire for freedom collides with the bonds of community. Centering lives rarely seen on screen with intimacy and humanity, the film celebrated its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
This film is nominated for the HIFF 2026 Kau Ka Hōkū Award presented by Hawaiian Airlines.
