On New Year’s Eve, Lei returns home to her seemingly picture-perfect middle-class Chinese family with a man she introduces as her boyfriend. But the relationship is a carefully constructed lie, designed to conceal the truth about her sexuality and satisfy the expectations of her traditional family. When Lei’s real girlfriend unexpectedly arrives, the evening’s delicate performance begins to unravel, forcing hidden tensions and unspoken truths to the surface.
As celebration gives way to confrontation, Lei finds herself caught between familial obligation, cultural expectations, and the desire to live authentically. Writer-director Michelle Zhou transforms an intimate family gathering into a tender exploration of identity, love, and the complicated ways families communicate—and avoid communicating—about what matters most. Both deeply personal and universally resonant, BIG LITTLE THINGS examines the seemingly small choices and compromises that can reveal much larger truths about intimacy, acceptance, and belonging.
