14TH

A decade after her Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning documentary 13TH, acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay turns her lens to another defining chapter of American history: the 14th Amendment. Written in the aftermath of the Civil War to establish citizenship and equal protection under the law, the amendment has remained at the center of a fierce debate over who belongs in America and whose rights are protected.

Blending extensive archival research with urgent contemporary headlines, 14TH traces more than 150 years of legal and political battles while connecting them directly to the present. DuVernay brings together more than 50 scholars, lawyers, historians, cultural commentators and political figures from across the ideological spectrum, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Anna Paulina Luna, Alex Padilla, Jeff Flake, Sherrilyn Ifill and Eric Foner. Expansive, provocative and deeply timely, 14TH asks a fundamental question that America continues to confront: Who gets to belong?
